Your 'Self' dissolves into the Supreme Self from Guru Poornima
As you go on realizing the importance of the Guru in your life and start following His or Her teachings, you will come to realize the mindboggling expanse of this shakti. You will begin recognizing that each and every atom of creation is pervaded by the Guru Principle.
Lord Shiva initiates this principle to Mother Parvathi, the Great Cosmic Divine Mother Herself through Verse 71, Shri Guru Gita -
|| Sthaavaram jangamam chaiva tathaachaiva chara-acharam |
| vyaptam yena jagatsarvam tasmai Shri Gurave namaha ||
Lord Shiva says, “Let us bow to Shri Guru, who is in the animate as well as the inanimate, the movable and the immovable- that cosmic energy- Brahman- which pervades the entire universe!”
It is the Gurushakti which is
The driving force in energy of the universe
The revealing force in the consciousness of man
The feeling force in His awareness and Liberation
It is the Shakti that makes every cell inside you active and is present even in the inanimate as protons, neutrons and electrons- the very basic particles of creation. Brahman is the smallest element of the smallest (Anoraneeyaan) and the largest element of the largest (Mahatomaheeyaan) - The Guru consciousness (chaitanya) is everywhere and it will reveal itself to you if you call forth that force with faith and devotion- just as Lord Vishnu revealed Himself in an inanimate pillar to Prahlada when his father Hiranyakashipu challenged the very Lord’s existence!
How do you start feeling this Guru shakti within you?
You have to first set aside some time every day for directing your attention to your soul, which you had either neglected or were not aware at all through lifetimes of ignorance. Just as you place a flower and light lamps at the altar of God in your house every day, direct your attention to your soul everyday in the sacred space of ether in the centre of your heart –Chidaakasha. With this Shakti, with this feeling force bringing out your awareness, you will be made to realize that the Guru, Brahman and your soul are one and the same!
Now, Lord Shiva says,-“Fix the form of your Guru in your heart and meditate on it, not just with faith and devotion- but also with discipline! The most important requirements for doing Meditation- dhyana are your noble intentions, and a proper seat or asana. Dhyana should not be done randomly sitting or standing on whatever is available- it can be ineffective or worse. It can even be harmful, says Lord Shivain Verse 137,Shri Guru Gita.
|| Vastraasane daridraym, paashaane roga sambhavaha |
| Medinyaam dukhamaapnoti kaashte bhavati nishphalam ||
Lord Shiva reveals the malefic effects of ignorantly choosing the wrong asana - the seat for meditation. He says, Sitting on a seat of cloth leads one to misfortune, sitting on stone floor or on a rock brings diseases; do not sit on the ground directly as it brings sorrow and a seat made of wood is ineffective, says Lord Shiva. All these seats are grounding energies, whereas a proper seat is one that generates energy for tapas (penance for liberation). With grounding energies, your tapo shakti (the power of meditation) will be drained away into earth. Whereas a proper asana, like a Woolen shawl or a mat of Kusa (the sharp, tall grass growing on a river bank) or Darbha grass generates energy, protects and retains the Guru shakti (the soul power) in you.
Thus when you sit for meditation(dhyana) with the right resolution (sankalp) , seated on the right asana, your seat becomes a Shakti peeta (Power Pedestal)- as the shakti – Kundalini (the Serpent Power in your spine ) will start rising within you, and you the meditator yourself will become Sadashiva!
Start consecrating Shiva-Shakti from today, by starting the meditation (dhyana) and chanting the mantra of “Om Jai Gurudeva”, so that by the auspicious day of Guru Poornima, the power will start flowing from within you. This day is earmarked in the entire year for worship of the Guru, and this month of Monsoon (Ashaada)- is dedicated to Guru worship and nothing else. It is a time to stop propitiating different forms of divinity to fulfill your selfish desires- as you may have been doing throughout the year and start seeking the Self through the Guru.
Use this wonderful opportunity to start your spiritual journey under the guidance and presence of your Guru from this day.
… Satsang will continue tomorrow...
